What it's like to go travel on the Oregon Trail?
Thursday April 18th, 1837
Today my family and I have been packing and gathering all the supplies we need to travel through the route known as the Oregon Trail. The wagon was full and it was very hard to even fit us in as well. I've been very anxious to come to a new land that is fertile and may help my family and I to have a better life. I hope the land is worth traveling 2,000 miles for. We will be leaving very soon and will be on our way!

We left just a couple days ago and started our journey. So far most things have been fine, the days are long and we must drive for about 15 hours each day. I have seen many other wagons on the same route. We have also talked to people that were going to walk the entire 2,000 miles. For me, that sounded so difficult, i wouldn't be able to walk the distance. My parents have become tired.

Today has been one of the worst out of the journey so far. As we came along on the trail my brother became very ill, he was always thirsty and very dehydrated, he had caught the disease Cholera. Well on this very day when my family and I awoke, we noticed that my brother Luke was no longer with us. I can't believe this has happened to us. We had to bury and leave him behind. My parents explained that we must move on, but I just don't understand how we are suppose to when all this has occurred. So I said my goodbye to Luke and we went on our way.

It's been about a month since Luke passed and I am still very devastated. Besides that, we have met new people who have told us worse stories of what happened to their family. I learned that there are many other accidents that can happen to people than I thought. One man who came along, David, explained what happened to his son. He told us that in the first month of his journey, his son was fooling around on the wagon and ended up slipping and falling. His son was ran over by their wagon and killed instantly. I am so thankful that nothing this tragic happened to Luke. I hope David gets what he wants when he reaches his destination.

So far the route hasn't been a joy ride. The weather is awful, we've had an enormous amount of rain and there was no shelter for us. As we rode along we have seen many deaths because of all the lightning and storms. We have just a little less than a quarter left of our journey. I'm very excited for all of this to be over. My mother and father told me that tomorrow we will be crossing a river and it will be very dangerous, so I'm worried what will happen but I pray everything will go as planned.

We have arrived, I'm filled with anxiety and excitement! I can't wait to start a new life! I just have this feeling that all these hardships we've been through are going to be worth it, I mean so many people I've seen went through so much more and i hope they get what they dreamed of too. My parents are also excited. This is going to be a great new beginning.
